Veterinary Assistant - College Certificate

If you dream of working with animals full-time, then your future starts here. Northern’s Veterinary Assistant program is a one-year certificate that lays the foundation for a great job – and it’s also the gateway to your continuing animal education. You’ll learn to prepare medication, counsel clients on patient care, and assist with lab work and surgery prep. Under the direction of a vet, you’ll learn how to safely handle animals, provide basic care, and use physical restraints, as required.

You’ll also become a pro in the office – answering calls, booking appointments and taking care of business. That all adds up to you claiming your place as a valued team member at a kennel, shelter, grooming facility, municipality, veterinary company, and more.

Graduate with a Double Certificate
This program may be taken concurrently with the Animal Grooming program. The student would then graduate with a double certificate.

Graduates may find employment in veterinary practices, federal and provincial institutions, universities, humane societies, pet food outlets, veterinary companies, grooming facilities and kennels.

PSW Opportunity

If your program was less than 8 months

You aren’t eligible for a PGWP.

If your program was more than 8 months but less than 2 years

We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for up to the same length as your study program.

For example, if you completed a 9-month program, we may give you a work permit for up to 9 months.

If your program was 2 years or more

We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for 3 years.

If you completed more than 1 program

You may be able to get a PGWP that combines the length of each program.

Each of the programs you completed -

must be PGWP-eligible and at least 8 months in length

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

In addition to the admission requirements, international students must have proof of English Proficiency and meet the requirements below.

1. Proof of Senior High School Diploma/Certificate

2. English Proficiency (we will require one of the following):

- IELTS Academic– International English Language Testing System: a minimum overall score of 6.0 must be achieved with no individual band score under 6.0; however, we will accept one band at 5.5.
- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) – Computer-based overall minimum score of 79
- PTE (Pearson Test of English) Academic – Graduate Diploma: 58+

If your country of citizenship has English as its official language, we may accept alternate proof of English Proficiency

All educational documents must be submitted in English and will be dependant on the country of citizenship.
