Mechanical Engineering Technician - College Diploma

In just two years, Northern’s Mechanical Engineering Technician program will prepare you for a career in a wide range of industries from mining, oil and gas, to forestry, automotive and construction.

As a Mechanical Engineering Technician, you’ll be called upon to provide technical support and services. This includes the design, development, testing, manufacture and maintenance of machines, tools, engines and electronic equipment as well as heating, piping and ventilation systems.

You’ll get extensive hands-on training in a modern manufacturing lab complete with the latest scanners, printers, mills, and lathes. And, you’ll learn how to make expert sketches, layouts, 2D drawings and 3D models.

Pathways to Success

Graduates of the Mechanical Engineering Technician Program may choose to continue their studies and complete an additional year in order to obtain a diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology at the Timmins campus. Graduates of this program may be eligible to enroll in the Mechanical Engineering degree program at Lakehead University.

PSW Opportunity

If your program was less than 8 months

  •    You aren’t eligible for a PGWP.

If your program was more than 8 months but less than 2 years

  •    We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for up to the same length as your study program.

For example, if you completed a 9-month program, we may give you a work permit for up to 9 months.

If your program was 2 years or more

  •    We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for 3 years.

If you completed more than 1 program

  •    You may be able to get a PGWP that combines the length of each program.

Each of the programs you completed -

  • must be PGWP-eligible and at least 8 months in length

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

In addition to the admission requirements, international students must have proof of English Proficiency and meet the requirements below.

1. Proof of Senior High School Diploma/Certificate

2. English Proficiency (we will require one of the following):

  • IELTS Academic International English Language Testing System: a minimum overall score of 6.0 must be achieved with no individual band score under 6.0; however, we will accept one band at 5.5.
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) – Internet Based Test (iBT) overall minimum score of 79
  • PTE (Pearson Test of English) Academic – Graduate Diploma: 58+

If your country of citizenship has English as its official language, we may accept alternate proof of English Proficiency.

All educational documents must be submitted in English and will be dependent on the country of citizenship.
