Postgraduate Diploma in Criminology
Within the School of Social and Cultural Studies, you’ll be part of a strong culture of postgraduate research and supervision. You’ll be encouraged to pursue an area of criminology that matches your goals and interests. Our teaching staff will actively mentor you through the process of developing a project, conducting research, and writing the dissertation that forms the cornerstone of your Master of Criminology degree.
Carrying out original, independent research, you’ll hone your skills in analysing and presenting arguments. You’ll develop a critical mindset that will give you a sound framework for evaluating a variety of real-world scenarios. And you’ll improve your written and spoken communication as you present your findings in reports and in academic forums.
Fast-track your studies
The Master of Criminology can be completed in 12 months over three consecutive trimesters. It’s a great way to accelerate your learning and prepare yourself for a professional role or for further study at doctoral level.
If you are interested in a shorter programme of study, you might consider the 60-point Postgraduate Certificate in Criminology or the 120-point Postgraduate Diploma in Criminology. All three qualifications are “staircased”, so that courses completed for a smaller qualification can count towards a larger one.

PSW Opportunity
Level 7 (Bachelor’s degree)
- Duration: Equal to length of study (typically up to 3 years)
- Requirement: minimum 30 weeks full time study in NZ
Level 7 (Graduate Diploma)
Eligible for PSWV
Conditions:
- Must also hold a Bachelor’s degree (NZ or overseas)
- Duration: Up to length of study (typically 1 year)
Level 8 (Postgraduate Diploma)
- Duration: Equal to length of study, OR
- Up to 3 years in some cases (if part of higher qualification pathway)
Level 9 and 10 (Master’s degree and Doctoral degree)
- Duration: 3 years
- Condition: Must study at least 30 weeks in New Zealand
- Most eligible international students can work up to 25 hours per week during study and full-time during scheduled breaks, only if their student visa includes work rights.
- Foundation, pathway and short courses have different rules.
- Not allowed for part time students.
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
For entry into a programme at postgraduate level (including a graduate diploma, Honour’s degree, postgraduate diploma, or Master’s degree), as a minimum, you need the equivalent of a Bachelor’s (undergraduate) degree from a recognised institution with at least a B average.
A background in a particular subject area may be required or recommended. Entry is at the programme director’s discretion.
