Illustration - BA (Hons)
BA Hons Illustration at Ulster will introduce you to a huge range of highly creative practices from experimental drawing/image making to critical thinking. You will learn in dedicated studios and workshops to develop confidence, independence and your own visual language for future working in the diverse and exciting world of illustration.
You will explore multiple illustration contexts including books/publishing, graphic novels, packaging, 2D animation/film/gifs, magazines/zines, and much more. The course is taught by dedicated and experienced tutors who work, exhibit and publish internationally. We are passionate about illustration and encourage and support you to become an ambitious and skilled problem solver.
At Ulster you will learn from alumni and industry leaders. Our Illustration graduates regularly win international competitions and work for clients locally as well as around the globe. There are many opportunities to build real world connections to help you stand out as you begin a career in professional illustration and creative industries.

Job Opportunity Potential
Illustration graduates are successful in the illustration/design/publishing/animation/multimedia/ photography/broadcasting/marketing/editorial/magazine/film/creative/advertising and promotional industries.
Many of the illustration, publishing and design studios in Northern Ireland are staffed or run by graduates from the course. Alumni include illustrators Oliver Jeffers, Barry Falls, Jacky Sheridan, Ashling Lindsay, Jamie Beard, Peter Strain... in addition graduates find employment in diverse media, television, film and publishing roles.

Those wishing to research and develop their own work to a higher level go on to pursue a Masters qualification either at the University of Ulster, or at other institutions in the UK and further afield. There is also the potential for entry onto a PhD.
There are also opportunities for those wishing to teach after the completion of a postgraduate teaching qualification (PGCE).
PSW Opportunity
- 2 Years PSW is applicable after completing a minimum duration of 9 months course (like- Undergraduate, Postgraduate Level)
- 3 Years PSW is applicable after completing PhD level courses.
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
Each programme will have slightly different requirements, both in terms of overall points and certain subjects, so please check the relevant subject in the undergraduate on-line prospectus.
Normally Ulster University welcomes applications from students with:
All Indian Standard XII (Central Boards or a State Board) with an overall average of 60% to include 50% or above in 5 subjects Where a course has subject-specific requirements 60% will be required in each of these subjects.
OR
3 year Diploma in an engineering or technology subject from a State Board of Technical Education with overall 60% (Accredited by ACITE)
Usually the minimum English language entry requirement is IELTS (academic) of 6.0 (with no band score of less than 5.5).
Some of our courses ask for a higher score.
If you do not meet the English language requirement we will give you a conditional offer subject to you meeting the requirement before the commencement of the course.
