PGCE Secondary History with Geography

Throughout the course, you develop an understanding of both the theory and practice of teaching History (as your ‘major’ subject) and Geography as your (‘minor’ subject) using a range of learning and teaching approaches. Training as part of a PGCE Humanities cohort, who train to teach two of the three Humanities subjects (Geography, History and RE), you are supported in developing practical classroom skills in teaching your major and minor subject and in the teacher’s wider professional role.

Our programme prepares you to teach across the age range 11-16 and is structured around a combination of taught modules based at the University and placement modules based in schools or educational settings. Classroom practice is assessed through placements, totalling 120 days. You also have the opportunity to gain Masters level credits (up to 60 credits). 

The teaching team includes University staff with specialisms in History and Geography and in Initial Teacher Education; local authority advisers and staff; diocesan advisers; and secondary school teacher tutors. Students are supported through a combination of face-to-face university-based teaching and directed self-study/ research. Seminars and workshops are supported by school-based tasks to enable theory and practice to be integrated.

We place significant emphasis on enabling you to apply your learning to teaching in the classroom. During your teaching placements you will have the opportunity to work alongside some of the best and most inspiring teachers predominantly in Hampshire secondary schools. We also offer a number of placements in neighbouring counties, such as Dorset, Wiltshire, Berkshire and Surrey.

Students attend University to become experts in their field, to improve themselves and their future potential. We recommend that students work no more than 15 hours a week (during term time), to avoid any negative impact on their studies. However, students can often be extremely flexible with their hours, often choosing to work less during exam periods but more during peak periods, such as Christmas and Easter. PSW Opportunity

  • 2 Years PSW is applicable after completing a minimum duration of 9 months course (like- Undergraduate, Postgraduate Level)
  • 3 Years PSW is applicable after completing PhD level courses.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Successful completion of a bachelors degree, studied for a minimum of three years, with a GPA of 55% or above from a recognised University. Degrees from the main metropolitan universities, for example Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai (Madras) Mumbai (Bombay), Ahmadabad, Pune, Bangalore, Nagpur, Kanpur, Kolkata (Calcutta), Lucknow, Jaipur, Jodhpur. A well-recognised college affiliated with a large metropolitan university will normally be considered for entry with 60% (and above). Due to the very stringent marking schemes at the University of Calcutta and University of Pune (First Class degrees normally given marks between 58%-62%) we might accept students with lower marks.

All of our courses require you to hold a minimum of GCSE English Language at grade C or 4. However, we accept alternatives for most courses such as level 2 Adult Literacy, Functional Skills or English within other qualifications, such as the International Baccalaureate or Norwegian Vitnemål fra den Videregående Skole (VVO).

If your first language is not English we will usually ask you to take an English Language test, such as IELTS. We require an IELTS score of 6.0 overall, with a minimum of 5.5 in writing for all undergraduate courses, except the following:

BEd/MEd Primary Education and Journalism - IELTS 7.0 overall, including 7.0 in writing
Physiotherapy and Social Work – IELTS 7.0 overall, including no element below 6.5
