MA Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care
Canterbury Christ Church University is uniquely positioned in the UK as the only Church Foundation University with both a Theology team and a Medical School (the Kent and Medway Medical School). This makes for a distinctive opportunity for highly specialised interdisciplinary study in this area, supported across the institution. Further, the University is also home to the National Institute for Christian Education Research, which is fully engaged with work relevant to the leadership of “Faith Schools” and Religious Education. As a Church of England Foundation, the University also has a vibrant and well-supported Chaplaincy team of its own, which, in addition to delivering pastoral care, actively contributes to academic research in this area.
As well as providing a postgraduate qualification in theology and religious studies, the course develops knowledge and understanding relevant to charity and community work, to hospital and other types of chaplaincy, as well as to educational institutions and the school sector.
The MA Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care provides a qualification relevant to the professional and specialist vocation of chaplains. Normally, students on this route award will already have professional pastoral roles as chaplains, and they will be expected to draw on their experiences as appropriate to their academic course. Should a student following this route not have a professional role as a chaplain, they will be expected to engage with academic theory applicable to this pastoral role, thus developing skills and knowledge of relevance to this vocation. The course will give essential postgraduate experience for those planning to go on to a PhD, and give you an edge in the professional job market.

- 2 Years PSW is applicable after completing a minimum duration of 9 months course (like- Undergraduate, Postgraduate Level)
- 3 Years PSW is applicable after completing PhD level courses.
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
Bachelor of Arts/Science/Commerce degree of at least three years duration or Professional Degree (4 years+)
For programmes requiring a 2:2
• 3-year Bachelor's degree (Honours) from an accredited university with a minimum overall average of 55% or CGPA 6.0 out of 10.0 depending on the university
• 3-year Bachelor's degree (Science) from an accredited university with a minimum overall from 55% or CGPA 6.0 out of 10.0 depending on the university
• 4-year Bachelor's degree (Eng/Tech) from an accredited university with a minimum overall average of 55% or CGPA 6.0 out of 10.0 depending on the university.
For postgraduate
IELTS – minimum of 6.5
IELTS Writing – minimum of 6.0
IELTS in all other bands – minimum of 5.5.

We are also able to consider some non-UK English qualifications for entry. The Admissions Team will advise if they are able to accept your English language qualification once you have applied.
We are able to waive the IELTS requirements for the following qualifications:
65% in Standard XII CBSE and ISC English
70% in Standard XII English under the state boards of Maharashtra, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala (For the higher IELTS requirements, the grades required in Standard XII will increase by 5% for each 0.5 increase in IELTS e.g. IELTS 6.5 requires 70% for CBSE and ICSE and 75% for Maharashtra, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala.)
We will not accept Medium of Instruction.
