GIS & Precision Agriculture Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (B.S.A.)
Formerly Agricultural Systems Technology, students choosing this major can complete requirements either in-person or online. It prepares students to use spatial data and geospatial technologies to solve problems in agriculture and other human-environment interactions. The GIS components of our program give students the ability to use spatial data to make decisions, make maps, and perform spatial analysis. The remote sensing curriculum exposes students to both space-based satellite imagery and airborne imagery. This includes images acquired from both airplanes and unmanned aircraft systems. Most of our students acquire the FAA part 107 sUAS Remote Pilot Certificate, allowing them to fly sUAS commercially.
The precision agriculture components of our program emphasize data driven agronomic decision making. Emphasis is placed on the use of tools and techniques for efficient irrigation. Furthermore, students learn to analyze agronomic sites to determine if nutrient, pesticide, or seeding rate variability is appropriate and how to generate prescriptions and read as-applied maps for satellite guided equipment.
As a culmination of the degree, students will utilize the skills and background knowledge they have acquired to create a solution to an agricultural or related human-environment problem.
