Human Services Professional Development Advanced Certificate
The Advanced Certificate in Human Services Professional Development provides individuals with an opportunity to engage in increased education and career growth. Based on their interests and professional goals, students may choose among a wide variety of courses, all of which are available online. Part-time or full-time study is an option. In consultation with an applicable regulatory body, courses may also be used to meet provincial regulatory requirements.

Tumbler Ridge
The District of Tumbler Ridge is Canada's youngest community, established in 1981 as a coal mining community.
Dawson Creek
The City of Dawson Creek, or the Mile Zero City, is the starting point on the world famous Alaska Highway, and is the largest centre in the Peace River South region.
Chetwynd
The District of Chetwynd is located in the beautiful foothills of the Rocky Mountains, approximately an hour west of Dawson Creek, and three hours north of Prince George
Fort Nelson
The Town of Fort Nelson is the largest centre in the Northern Rockies Regional District, with a population of about 4,700.
Fort St. John
The City of Fort St. John is known as the Energetic City, because of its location in the heart of the oil and gas industry in northeastern B.C. Fort St. John is located at Mile 47 of the Alaska Highway, has a population of approximately 18,000, and serves a drawing area of about 60,000 people.

Job Opportunity Potential
Ongoing professional development may diversify career opportunities while also meeting certification requirements. For example, Northern Lights College Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care graduates may complete an additional practicum course (ECED 208new window or ECED 210new window) as ongoing professional development in order to enhance BC ECE Registry certification.

If your program was less than 8 months
- You aren’t eligible for a PGWP.
If your program was more than 8 months but less than 2 years
- We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for up to the same length as your study program.
For example, if you completed a 9-month program, we may give you a work permit for up to 9 months.
If your program was 2 years or more
- We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for 3 years.
If you completed more than 1 program
- You may be able to get a PGWP that combines the length of each program.
Each of the programs you completed -
- must be PGWP-eligible and at least 8 months in length
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
Credential-based Admission
Complete all of:
- Copy of a government-issued photo ID with full legal name
- Completion of a certificate, diploma, or degree in a human services, education, or health care field from an accredited post-secondary institution.
- A clearance letter from the Criminal Records Review Program (CRRP), for a Schedule “B” Criminal Record Check (CRC), WORKS WITH Children or WORKS WITH Children and Vulnerable Adults. For information and regulations, see Criminal Records Checksnew window.
Experience-based Admission
Applicants must be a minimum 19 years of age on the first day of classes; and
Complete all of:
- English Requirement
- English Studies 12 with a C grade or higher
- English First Peoples 12 with a C grade or higher
- English 12 with a C grade or higher
- English Literature 12 with a C grade or higher
- ENGL 050new window with a C grade or higher
- ENGL 099new window with a C grade or higher
- Any university-level English course with a C grade or higher
- NLC Writing Assessment with placement at the college level (100)
- Copy of a government-issued photo ID with full legal name
- Comprehensive letter1
- Two letters of reference2

1 The comprehensive letter must state the applicant’s experience, interest, and goals. Information on experience must show a minimum of three years in human services, education, and/or health care settings (e.g., K-12, early care and learning, community services, Indigenous services, and/or residential care). Such experience may include working with a child who has diverse abilities and who has been involved in a variety of supportive care models.
