General Arts and Sciences Certificate

The University Arts and Sciences (UNAS) program at Northern Lights College (NLC) serves individuals and communities by providing university-level learning opportunities that reflect the intellectual and creative modes of inquiry practiced in the arts and sciences. A wide variety of first and second-year courses enable learners to pursue numerous credential and career options, and to engage in personal enrichment.

The Certificate in General Arts and Sciences is awarded to students who complete 30 credits of UNAS courses. The certificate is intended to allow students to explore the Arts and Sciences, and to potentially prepare students for continued university-level studies leading to a Bachelor’s Degree.

Tumbler Ridge

The District of Tumbler Ridge is Canada's youngest community, established in 1981 as a coal mining community.

Dawson Creek

The City of Dawson Creek, or the Mile Zero City, is the starting point on the world famous Alaska Highway, and is the largest centre in the Peace River South region.

Chetwynd

The District of Chetwynd is located in the beautiful foothills of the Rocky Mountains, approximately an hour west of Dawson Creek, and three hours north of Prince George

Fort St. John

The City of Fort St. John is known as the Energetic City, because of its location in the heart of the oil and gas industry in northeastern B.C. Fort St. John is located at Mile 47 of the Alaska Highway, has a population of approximately 18,000, and serves a drawing area of about 60,000 people.

Job Opportunity Potential

By taking a planned combination of Northern Lights College courses, students may complete a full year of university-level courses and then transfer to a number of university degree programs.

PSW Opportunity

If your program was less than 8 months

  •    You aren’t eligible for a PGWP.

If your program was more than 8 months but less than 2 years

  •    We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for up to the same length as your study program.

For example, if you completed a 9-month program, we may give you a work permit for up to 9 months.

If your program was 2 years or more

  •    We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for 3 years.

If you completed more than 1 program

  •    You may be able to get a PGWP that combines the length of each program.

Each of the programs you completed -

  • must be PGWP-eligible and at least 8 months in length

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

For applicants from countries that practice Standard Written English, one of the following:

  • English Studies 12 with a grade of B or higher, or equivalent
  • English First Peoples 12 with a grade of B or higher, or equivalent
  • ENGL 050new window with a grade of B or higher, or equivalent
  • ENGL 099new window with a grade of B or higher, or equivalent
  • Any university-level English course with a grade of C or higher
  • NLC Writing Assessment with placement at the college level (100)

For all other applicants, one of the following:

  • IELTS result with an overall score of 6.0 or higher with no band less than 6.0*
  • TOEFL iBT of 78
  • Canadian Academic English Assessment (CAEL) 60 overall band
  • Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment (CLBA) 8 in each section
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) 57
  • Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) 76
  • Cambridge-Michigan Language Assessment (CaMLA) 69 plus NLC’s Writing Assessment
  • A post-secondary level credential with equivalent English language requirements
  • Two years of full-time secondary school education in English in Canada and completion of English 12, English Studies 12, English Literature 12, English 12 First Peoples, or equivalent with a minimum grade of B.
  • Completion of the Citation in English for Academic Purposes Level 060

* Students with a writing band of 6.0 or less are required to complete ENGL 099new windowwith a B grade or higher before or during the first semester of their program.

Math Requirement

One of the following:

  • Pre-calculus 11 with a C grade (60%) or higher
  • Principles of Mathematics 11 with a C grade (60%) or higher
  • Foundations of Math 11 with a C grade (60%) or higher
  • MATH 040new window or equivalent with a C grade or higher
  • Readiness for MATH 050new window as determined by the CCP Math appraisal.

Note - Elective courses may have specific prerequisites. Meeting entrance requirements for the program does not ensure course prerequisites have been met for all available courses.
