Bachelor of special education
The bachelor of special education program is for those who hold a prior degree in education. The program is designed to prepare teachers of kindergarten to grade 12 who specialize in accommodating learner diversity and exceptionalities in the school system. This 36 credit hour professional program is available through part-time or full-time study. A number of courses are available through online learning.

Job Opportunity Potential
In addition to being qualified as a special education teacher, graduates of the program are often seen as having an advantage for both regular classroom and leadership positions in the school system. The skills learned, including organization and planning, conflict resolution and interagency collaboration, also provide graduates with the background for a variety of industry-based positions.

- You aren’t eligible for a PGWP.
If your program was more than 8 months but less than 2 years
- We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for up to the same length as your study program.
For example, if you completed a 9-month program, we may give you a work permit for up to 9 months.
If your program was 2 years or more
- We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for 3 years.
If you completed more than 1 program
- You may be able to get a PGWP that combines the length of each program.
Each of the programs you completed -
- must be PGWP-eligible and at least 8 months in length

Diplomas in engineering, technology or other specializations are not accepted in lieu of a 12th level certificate.
- Students who are missing an eligible course in one of subject groups 2, 3 or 4, who apply for admission to a program that does not require completion of these courses, will be considered for general admission. In this case, an eligible course in subject groups 1, 2, 3 or 4 may be used to substitute the missing course.
- Calculus is a required course in first year for business/commerce (St. John's campus only) and science programs at Memorial. To ensure students are prepared for entry into their chosen program of study, 12th level pre-calculus mathematics is normally required for admission to these programs.
- The mathematics requirement may also be met through the College Board SAT. A minimum Math Test score of 500 is required for general admission; 550 is recommended for business/commerce and science programs as noted above.

To be considered for admission to the bachelor of special education program, you must have:
- been awarded a degree in primary and/or elementary education, music education, or intermediate/secondary education from Memorial University or another recognized institution
- completed EDUC 4240 (or equivalent) and EDUC 3312 and 3543, or 4350 (or equivalent)
- successfully completed a professional internship in education or have equivalent teaching experience prior to admission
- A minimum 65% average in the last 20 attempted three credit hour courses (not including the internship)
Consideration will be given to the courses for which you are registered at the time of application. Provisional acceptance may be granted if you will have successfully completed all prerequisites prior to the commencement of the program. A percentage of program spaces will be allocated to applicants having relevant teaching experience.
