Journalism (MA)

Gain sought-after skills as an adaptable, data-literate multimedia journalist. With an MA in Journalism from DePaul, you’ll graduate with more than an academic understanding of journalism and its impact on the world; you’ll have a solid professional network and robust portfolio to show employers.

Create socially responsible, accurate and impactful digital, print, and broadcast content using the latest reporting tools. W?hether you’re an active professional looking to expand your knowledge and network, or your bachelor’s degree is in another field and you want to pivot to journalism—you’ll leave DePaul headed to the next step of your writing, editing or production career.

For international students: this program is a STEM-designated program, which can qualify you to extend your post-graduation stay in the United States.

The program is typically completed in two years. Most classes are offered weekday evenings on the Loop or Lincoln Park Campuses. Some classes are offered during the day or online.

PSW Opportunity

Post-Study Work visa or permit, allowing international students on F-1 visas to work in the US after completing their studies, typically through Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Eligibility:
To be eligible for OPT, students must have been enrolled full-time in a US educational institution for at least one academic year and be seeking work related to their major.

Duration:
Students can apply for up to 12 months of OPT, either before they finish their studies (pre-completion) or after graduation (post-completion).

STEM OPT:
Students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields can apply for an extended OPT period of up to 24 months.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

A graduate applicant is a student who has completed at least a bachelor's degree or an equivalent higher education degree, and is interested in applying for a master's or a PhD program. You are considered an international graduate applicant if you have earned a bachelor’s degree outside of the U.S.

The minimum scores for direct admission are a TOEFL score of 80 (ibt) with all section scores at 17 or higher, or an IELTS score of 6.5, or a Duolingo English Test score of 115 and above, or a Pearson Test of English (PTE) score of 53. If your English proficiency scores are below the minimum requirements, you may be considered for conditional admission. Test scores are valid for two years and are official only when received directly from the testing vendor.
