Mental Health Counseling, Advanced Certificate

Make a difference helping those in need of therapy, counseling, career planning, and crisis intervention in a variety of settings and with a focus on social justice, cultural sensitivity, and technology.

Why Get an Advanced Certificate in Mental Health Counseling at New York Tech?
Our 15-credit Advanced Certificate in Mental Health Counseling program is designed to help certified school counselors transition to becoming licensed mental health counselors (LMHC). This program also serves mental health professionals with 48-credit degrees, providing the additional coursework needed to meet the 60-credit requirement for LMHC licensure in New York State.

Our curriculum equips you with the skills to provide individual, group, and family therapy, as well as health counseling, career planning, crisis intervention, and more. You’ll gain practical experience in various settings, including social services agencies, mental health agencies, substance abuse programs, and health-related facilities. The program emphasizes social justice, cultural sensitivity, and technological awareness, ensuring you’re prepared to meet the evolving needs of the human services landscape.

As a graduate, you’ll be prepared to sit for the National Clinical Mental Health Counselor Examination (NCMHCE) and practice under a limited permit, supervised by a licensed mental health professional. You’ll develop competencies in advocacy, clinical assessments, counseling techniques, ethical and legal standards, and treatment planning. This advanced certificate not only bridges the gap to LMHC licensure but also enhances your existing skills as a practicing school counselor.
