Mathematics BSc (Hons)

In today's rapidly evolving information age, employers in dynamic and well-paid industries have great demand for graduates with strong mathematical skills and the ability to analyse and model complex problems in a mathematical way.

Mathematics provides the advanced tools and techniques needed for facing these new tasks, and takes an increasingly significant role in future developments, as IT systems and 'big data' become ever more central to modern life. The single honours BSc (Hons) Mathematics programme combines elements of data analysis and computing with more traditional applied Mathematics modules. There is an optional placement year after the second year (sandwich course).

This program focuses on a principled approach to the foundations of Mathematics and specific analytical skills required for the challenges of the information age. Combining both principal and specialised subjects, the course prepares students for high-level careers in industry and the public sector.

The course has been specifically designed to meet the huge demand for skilled Mathematics graduates in finance, data analaytics companies and more generally for all information-processing businesses. An external panel from industry has advised on the content and structure of the course. Graduates may be employed in a broad range of positions; for instance in research and development teams as part of a large company or in start-ups, as trainee analysts and consultants. Graduates may also continue their training in MSc and PhD courses, or pursue teaching and education careers.

Typical areas of employment included finance, IT, education and consultancy.

Personal Development
The Mathematics course is designed to support development outside of the academic discipline to foster and encourage skills required within the workplace.

In the first year, students practice mathematics writing skills, developing communication strategies that prove essential during the placement year or in the final year projects.
In the second year, presentation and writing skills are developed to include the writing and presentation of technical documents, as well as engaging students in the issues faced by the scientific community when developing leading-edge research.
In the final year, students are able to undertake an individual research project which is mentored by an academic supervisor and contributes towards a significant portion of the final degree classification. This allows students to demonstrate the life-skills they have learnt on the modules, and practised whilst on industrial placement. These include time management, planning, research and report writing.
Employers appreciate Mathematics highly as an academic discipline. By dealing with and communicating complex concepts and ideas, it trains the mind in a way that will never become outdated. It allows students to hone analytical skills that are valued by companies across many different sectors.

Practice your video interview skills
The employers we work with are doing more and more video interviews – for obvious reasons. Video interviews can be awkward and scary, but it doesn't have to be that way. The more you practice, the more comfortable you become. We've got a host of online tools to help you get prepped.

PSW Opportunity

2 Years PSW is applicable after completing a minimum duration of 9 months course (like- Undergraduate, Postgraduate Level)
3 Years PSW is applicable after completing PhD level courses.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Undergraduate applicants

Typically, you may be exempt from taking a SELT such as IELTS, TOEFL etc, depending on:

A strong Class 12 English paper score (typically, 75-85% and above).
The Examination Board in India
The School you are applying to at Aston University
These exemptions do not apply to Aston Medical School MBChB Programme.

You can apply for Year 1 of an undergraduate degree after class 12 from either a National or State Examination Board.

Admissions tutors are looking for high marks in standard 10 and 12. The marks required vary depending on which Indian Board you studied with and which subject you are applying to. In general, applicants should score in the range of 75-85% average as a minimum.

Some degree programmes, such as engineering, sciences and languages, require specific subject backgrounds.

English Language Requirements
To be accepted onto our programmes, you must be able to satisfy the University's English language requirements. The level required will depend on the programme you are applying for. We strive to make your application process as easy as possible, however in all cases we reserve the right to request an English language qualification and / or conduct an interview.
