Biomedical Science BSc (Hons)

Biomedical Science is the study of the human body in relation to infections and disease. It focuses on the way our cells, organs and other systems operate in the body. This knowledge is pivotal in the diagnosis and treatment of various human diseases, as well as the development of ground-breaking medicines.

Studying our Biomedical Science degree gives you the abilities needed to provide healthcare, undertake medical research and understand the pharmaceutical industry. You’ll gain a thorough understanding of the core principles of how the human body works as well as discovering how biomedical scientists find new ways to cure and treat disease by developing advanced diagnostic tools or new therapeutic strategies.

Our optional integrated placement year provides you with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the industry. For students who which to practice as a Biomedcial Scientist in the NHS, this year is also your opportunity to take an accredited placement (see placement year tab for full details).

What you will study

Year 1: During your first year you will study key topics that will form the basis of your biomedical science education, covering areas from microbiology to physiology. You’ll learn how to undertake laboratory work safely and discover more about the roles of the IBMS and the HCPC in governing the training and practice of biomedical scientists. In addition you will gain knowledge of careers available to graduates with biomedical science degrees.

Metabolism and Physiology for BMS.
Year 2: Your second year will see you continue your biomedical science education journey, this will include a combination of new subject areas such as the hormonal and immune systems and revisiting previously studied topics at a deeper level. You will learn how to select appropriate experimental approaches and test hypotheses as well as spending time reflecting on skills acquired and needed for your future career.

Mechanisms of Pathology
Cell Signalling and Physiology
Clinical Genetics and Human Disease.
Year 3 (optional): The optional placement year gives you the opportunity to gain valuable career boosting experience by setting your studies in a real world context of a working environment alongside professionals. You will get the chance to undertake your placement in a wide variety of settings such as hospitals, industrial or research laboratories or non-laboratory settings. Please see the placements tab for more information regarding accredited hospital laboratory placements.

Final Year: In your final year you will acquire the skills required to undertake your individual original research project including; how to critically review scientific literature, creating and testing hypotheses using appropriate methodologies, and gathering, analysing and interpreting data from your own studies and those of others. In addition you will study a small number of advanced topics and critically reflect on the enhancement of patient care and the importance of codes and acts in biomedical science.

If you're currently exploring ways to gain work experience, land a placement or secure a graduate role, it's important to be as prepared as possible for the process ahead. To help you get there, our resource library is packed with information on everything from drafting your first CV to nailing an assessment centre.

We also subscribe to a range of online tools that'll help you prepare for a psychometric test or video interview – practice makes perfect, after all! In addition, we’ve collated some useful online resources around working from home.

We do experience high demand for appointments, so we'd recommend checking out the resources on our website, using our online tools, or attending one of our events in the first instance. 

Practice your video interview skills
The employers we work with are doing more and more video interviews – for obvious reasons. Video interviews can be awkward and scary, but it doesn't have to be that way. The more you practice, the more comfortable you become. We've got a host of online tools to help you get prepped.

PSW Opportunity

  • 2 Years PSW is applicable after completing a minimum duration of 9 months course (like- Undergraduate, Postgraduate Level)
  • 3 Years PSW is applicable after completing PhD level courses.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Undergraduate applicants

Typically, you may be exempt from taking a SELT such as IELTS, TOEFL etc, depending on:

A strong Class 12 English paper score (typically, 75-85% and above).
The Examination Board in India
The School you are applying to at Aston University
These exemptions do not apply to Aston Medical School MBChB Programme.

You can apply for Year 1 of an undergraduate degree after class 12 from either a National or State Examination Board.

Admissions tutors are looking for high marks in standard 10 and 12. The marks required vary depending on which Indian Board you studied with and which subject you are applying to. In general, applicants should score in the range of 75-85% average as a minimum.

Some degree programmes, such as engineering, sciences and languages, require specific subject backgrounds.

English Language Requirements
To be accepted onto our programmes, you must be able to satisfy the University's English language requirements. The level required will depend on the programme you are applying for.  We strive to make your application process as easy as possible, however in all cases we reserve the right to request an English language qualification and / or conduct an interview.
