Certificate in Nursing (CAP) Training Scheme

This programme is for you if you are an Internationally Qualified Nurse (IQN) or you were registered in New Zealand but you have been out of practice for 5 years or more.

Through the programme you will be able to demonstrate your ability to meet the Nursing Council New Zealand’s (NCNZ’s) competencies for your scope of practice and to obtain a practising certificate to continue your career in nursing.

This is a full-time programme delivered over a maximum of twelve weeks consisting of a theory course and a clinical placement course.

PSW Opportunity

Level 7 (Bachelor’s degree)

  • Duration: Equal to length of study (typically up to 3 years)
  • Requirement: minimum 30 weeks full time study in NZ

Level 7 (Graduate Diploma)
Eligible for PSWV
Conditions:

  • Must also hold a Bachelor’s degree (NZ or overseas)
  • Duration: Up to length of study (typically 1 year)

Level 8 (Postgraduate Diploma)

  • Duration: Equal to length of study, OR
  • Up to 3 years in some cases (if part of higher qualification pathway)

Level 9 and 10 (Master’s degree and Doctoral degree)

  • Duration: 3 years
  • Condition: Must study at least 30 weeks in New Zealand

- Most eligible international students can work up to 25 hours per week during study and full-time during scheduled breaks, only if their student visa includes work rights.

- Foundation, pathway and short courses have different rules.

- Not allowed for part time students.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Certificate and Diploma Programmes (Equivalent entry to New Zealand NCEA Level 1 or 2) 

Higher Secondary Certificate / Standard 12. 

Degree Programmes

International Registered Nurses wishing to gain New Zealand Nursing Registration must have completed the application for registration process with the NCNZ and have received a decision letter outlining the requirements to be met to verify competency and New Zealand relevant skills.

English Language Requirements

All applicants must provide evidence that they have the necessary language literacy proficiency set by the NCNZ.

Applicants whose first language is not English must have:

  • An IELTS Academic test with a minimum score of 7.0 in reading, speaking and listening, and a minimum score of 6.5 for writing; or
  • An Occupational English Test (OET) with a minimum Grade B or minimum score 350 for reading, speaking and listening, and a minimum Grade C+ or minimum score 300 for writing

IELTS or OET scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test
