New Zealand Diploma in Business (Level 5)

This programme is designed to provide students with a broad base of business knowledge, and gain role-specific skills in either accounting or leadership and management.

All strands will learn about business operational functions, business communication, the New Zealand business context and interpersonal relationships.

In the accounting strand students will study financial transactions, financial statements, budgeting and taxation, and decision-making and analysis. This strand may equip graduates to work towards the academic requirements for CAANZ’s Accounting Technicians College.

In the leadership and management strand students will study business planning, project management, and leadership.

Job Opportunity Potential

Graduates will have the skills and knowledge to work in senior supervisory or operational advisory positions. Roles may include:

Accounting: Finance administrator, inventory controller, accounts receivable/payable officer.
Leadership and management: Manager, team leader, or supervisor at an operational level.
Administration and technology: Personal and executive assistant, project and event administrator, virtual assistant, office manager, or office administration team leader.
Graduates may also progress to further study such as our Bachelor of Applied Management, Bachelor of Accounting, or other relevant industry or professional qualifications at Level 6 or above.

Level 7 (Bachelor’s degree)

  • Duration: Equal to length of study (typically up to 3 years)
  • Requirement: minimum 30 weeks full time study in NZ

Level 7 (Graduate Diploma)
Eligible for PSWV
Conditions:

  • Must also hold a Bachelor’s degree (NZ or overseas)
  • Duration: Up to length of study (typically 1 year)

Level 8 (Postgraduate Diploma)

  • Duration: Equal to length of study, OR
  • Up to 3 years in some cases (if part of higher qualification pathway)

Level 9 and 10 (Master’s degree and Doctoral degree)

  • Duration: 3 years
  • Condition: Must study at least 30 weeks in New Zealand

- Most eligible international students can work up to 25 hours per week during study and full-time during scheduled breaks, only if their student visa includes work rights.

- Foundation, pathway and short courses have different rules.

- Not allowed for part time students.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

You are at least 16 years of age on the programme start date for the semester (or provide a completed Early Release Exemption form), and meet one of the following requirements:

  1. Achievement of NCEA Level 2 including:
    • 8 Literacy credits at Level 2 or above; and

    • 14 Numeracy credits at Level 1 or above Or

  2. An equivalent of the above
    Or
  3. Successful completion of an approved qualification at Level 3 or above with a relevant pathway.

Discretionary admission
If you do not meet any of the above options, and you think you have what it takes to complete this programme, you can apply for discretionary admission. Your application may be accepted if you can demonstrate a good chance of success. Approval of discretionary entrance applications will be at the discretion of the Relevant Academic Authority.
