Postgraduate Diploma in Science - Child and Family Psychology
The postgraduate Child and Family Psychology programme is unique within New Zealand and taught by academic and clinical staff from the University of Canterbury’s School of Health Sciences with other teaching staff as appropriate.
Our Postgraduate Diploma in Child and Family Psychology was designed to meet market demand for registered psychologists specifically trained to work with children, adolescents and families.
Our programme places a strong emphasis on consideration of strengths and resiliencies as well as challenges and difficulties, all within the context of the child's environment. We focus on children’s mental health and emotional well-being as well as their learning. We also aim to reflect the social and political context of children in Aotearoa (New Zealand) with an appropriate bicultural emphasis. We also include areas such as parenting, adult mental health and relationships in recognition that children and adolescents do not exist in isolation but are part of family and wider community systems.

PSW Opportunity
- During study, all students on a student visa can work up to 20 hours per week during semester and full time during vacations.
- After completing Level 7 Bachelor’s Degree or Higher Qualification, a student will get a three years open post-study work visa.
- After completing Level 8 Post Graduate courses of 1 year, students get 1 year PSW.
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
Academic entry requirements
The academic entry requirements for admission to this qualification are:
- A qualification is equivalent to a New Zealand university bachelor's degree with a minimum overall grade comparable to a B grade at UC and in a relevant subject area.
CAE or CPE
Score of 176 with a minimum of 169 in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
CCEL EAP
Level 2 with a minimum B+ grade.
FluentIQ
Overall mark of 8/10 with nothing less than a 7 being scored in a single category.
IELTS Academic
An average score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
ISE
ISE III with a pass in all 4 components.
LanguageCert
C1 Expert IESOL (LRWS) with HIGH PASS.
NZAPA
English New Zealand Accredited Pathway Assessment Level 3 (with no skill lower than Level 2).
NZCEL
Level 5.
Pearson Test of English (Academic)
PTE with an overall score of 58 and no PTE communicative skills score below 50.
TOEFL iBT
Total minimum score of 90, minimum score of 19 in reading, writing and listening. Please note UC only accepts TOEFL iBT scores from a single test date, not MyBest scores.
