English for Academic Purposes

Do you need to prepare for further study in Australia? Our English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course can help you develop the skills and knowledge you need.

The EAP course can help you get ready to study in Australian high schools, Technical & Further Education (TAFE), foundation studies courses and university at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Academic English can be very different to the English you use in conversation. It can be difficult to understand the new words and writing style used in academic settings, so preparing yourself for study in English is very important.

There are two levels in this course:

  • EAP1 (Upper Intermediate)
  • EAP2 (Pre-Advanced)

Each level of this course runs for 10 weeks. When you finish one of these levels, you have the opportunity to continue your study in an IELTS Preparation program for 10 weeks.

Reading skills for academic purposes

  • introduction to academic texts
  • techniques for efficient reading, including skimming for main ideas and scanning for specific information
  • analysing and describing graphs, diagrams and charts
  • predicting content from context
  • understanding the writer’s tone, style and purpose
  • extending your academic vocabulary for further studies

Listening skills for academic purposes

  • listening skills for lectures and tutorials
  • note-taking strategies and skills

Writing skills for academic purposes

  • summarising and paraphrasing, writing essays and reports on a range of academic genres
  • planning, drafting and editing skills
  • referencing skills

Speaking skills

  • oral presentation skills
  • collaborative speaking skills such as active listening and turn-taking
  • expressing, explaining and supporting a point of view confidently

Introduction to study skills

  • developing effective study habits

PSW Opportunity

Post Study Work Steam Renames to Post Higher Education Work Steam.

  • Bachelor degree holders including honours can get upto 2 years of post study stay
  • Master by course work and extended (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 2 years
  • Masters by research (with a duration exceeding 2 years) and PhD holder can stay upto 3 years
  • The Maximum eligible age to apply for PSW will be reduced to 35 years of age from 50 years of age for all applicants

Due to the Australian Indian Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement signed by the 2 countries, according to which:

  • Indian students completing bachelor degree including honours can stay upto 2 years
  • Bachelor degree with First class honours in STEM including ICT can stay upto 3 years
  • Masters by coursework in extended researched (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 3 years
  • PhD students can stay upto 4 years

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

English for Academic Purposes 1

  • IELTS 4.5 (writing 4.5, no band less than 4.0)
  • TOEFL 32 (writing 12, reading 2, listening 2, speaking 11)
  • PTE 30 (writing 30 with no communicative skill below 24)

English for Academic Purposes 2

  • IELTS 5.0 (writing  5.0, no band less than 4.5)
  • TOEFL 35 (writing 14, reading 3, listening 3, speaking 13)
  • PTE 36 (writing 36 with no communicative skill below 30)
