BA (Hons) Model Design and Special Effects

All three of our model design courses share the same First Year, giving you an excellent introduction to model making, prop making, sculpture and special effects. Building on this foundation, you’ll focus on developing your artistic and technical skills to produce models, animatronics and other effects. You’ll also gain hands-on experience of the specialist equipment used to produce rain, fire, smoke, wind and snow, and learn about the safe use of pyrotechnics.

In the Second Year, you will acquire an understanding of special effects design and receive a thorough grounding in the practical aspects of this. You will be able to combine your artistic and technical skills to produce animatronics, action props, models and special effects.

In your Final Year, you’ll work on major projects and create a professional portfolio to impress employers. Throughout your studies, you’ll use a mix of traditional techniques and modern technology. This course is accredited by Creative Skillset, reflecting the highest standard of teaching and facilities.

Study abroad

This course offers you the opportunity to study abroad through the University's study abroad programme. Study abroad opportunities are available worldwide and in Europe under the Erasmus+ Programme.

Work placement

Fantastic work experience opportunities are available for students across the three degrees within the Model and Special Effects programme. The staff team have excellent contacts in the creative industries and have won awards for their work supporting students in this activity.

Staff are frequently able to provide students with high-profile work placements. Students have worked on major blockbuster movies such as Captain America: The First Avenger, X Men: First Class, Wrath of the Titans, Batman 3: The Dark Knight Rises, Prometheus, Thor: The Dark World, Maleficent, World War Z, Edge of Tomorrow, Guardians of the Galaxy and Jupiter Ascending.

Campus Information

de Havilland Campus (Hatfield)

The 拢120-million de Havilland campus, which was built by Carillion, opened in September 2003 and is situated within 15 minutes walk of College Lane, and is built on a former British Aerospace site.This campus also houses its own Learning Resource Centre, a combined library and computer centre.[Hertfordshire Sports Village which includes a gym, swimming pool, squash courts is also on this site. The large Weston Auditiorium is present on the de Havilland campus, adjacent to the Learn Resource Centre. The auditorium has a capacity of 450 and can host talks both by university lectures for students and for guest lecturers for guests and students, music and films events and dance events.The campus also contains 11 halls of residence;

PSW Opportunity

2 Years PSW is applicable after completing a minimum duration of 9 months course (like- Undergraduate, Postgraduate Level)
3 Years PSW is applicable after completing PhD level courses.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

UCAS Points

A Level

BCC - Requires Maths A level. Other A Levels may come from a selection of either Engineering or Technology, Science, Design, Computing, or Business related subjects. General studies/critical thinking not accepted.

BTEC

DMM - Requires Extended Diploma in Engineering (DMM) to include Distinction in Further Maths

GCSE: Grade 4/C in English, Mathematics, and Science.

Foundation

Completion of the Standard XII Certificate with 50% or above
IELTS 4.5 with no less than 4.0 in any band

Undergraduate (year 1)

Completion of the Standard XII Certificate with 60-70% depending on points tariff required by the UH course. Some courses may require specific subjects
IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band for standard courses – some courses require higher
Standard XII English with 65% will also be accepted

Undergraduate (year 2/3)

Depending on qualifications and course - usually require 2/3 year Diploma post-Standard XII to be considered
IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band for standard courses – some courses require higher
