Master of Public Health

The Master of Public Health focuses on the prevention of illness and promotion of health.

Learning opportunities are aimed at developing the essential knowledge and skills required for practitioners in public health - including the effective management of community health problems to improve conditions and outcomes.

Why study public health with us?
100% online course delivery - this course is offered through our interactive online learning environment, giving you the flexibility to tailor your study schedule around your lifestyle. We also offer full-time and part-time options, allowing you to decide your study load. A face-to-face learning option will be available when on-campus study is permitted once more. 

Specialise in your chosen field –  the 1.5-year Master of Public Health will provide you the time needed to build competency and gain skills from a wide range of public health electives, allowing you specialise in an area that interests you and boosts your career prospects. You will be able to choose your elective units from within one of four specialisations:
chronic disease prevention
communicable disease control
health promotion and advocacy
research methods.
Apply public health principles - newly designed core units and electives will provide you with the skills needed to translate evidence and decisions into policy and practice at a national, regional and community level.

Research training – our Research Project capstone will equip you with the critical thinking skills and research training necessary to prepare you for a higher research degree.

First-class teaching – this course is taught by highly experienced academic staff who are active within the public health community and work closely with organisations such as the World Health Organisation, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, the Department of Health and Cancer Australia.

Make a real difference – you will be involved in teams and projects that are making a real difference to the health and wellbeing of individuals, communities and populations.
Diverse placement opportunities – you will have the opportunity to undertake a diverse range of professional placements and apply knowledge learnt in class to real-world projects with location-based organisations. Our students have completed placements with a range of organisations including NSW Environmental Health, NSW Cancer Council, NSW Health Protection unit, Safe Work Australia and the Heart Foundation.

PSW Opportunity

Post Study Work Steam Renames to Post Higher Education Work Steam.

  • Bachelor degree holders including honours can get upto 2 years of post study stay
  • Master by course work and extended (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 2 years
  • Masters by research (with a duration exceeding 2 years) and PhD holder can stay upto 3 years
  • The Maximum eligible age to apply for PSW will be reduced to 35 years of age from 50 years of age for all applicants

Due to the Australian Indian Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement signed by the 2 countries, according to which:

  • Indian students completing bachelor degree including honours can stay upto 2 years
  • Bachelor degree with First class honours in STEM including ICT can stay upto 3 years
  • Masters by coursework in extended researched (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 3 years
  • PhD students can stay upto 4 years

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Admission to the Master of Public Health requires:

  1. completion of the requirements for the embedded Graduate Diploma with at least a credit average in the core units of study; or
  2. a bachelor’s degree in public health, medicine, medical science, nursing, allied health (including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, optometry), dentistry, veterinary science, education, communication and journalism, science, arts, psychology, social science, political science, policy analysis, government, international relations, engineering, architecture, mathematics, law, economics, commerce, business, accounting and marketing from the University of Sydney or an equivalent qualification.
