The University of Brighton has an established reputation for pioneering research into art, design and material culture and is a recognised centre of excellence both nationally and internationally for design history.
Taking a cross-disciplinary approach, researchers at all levels in the university's Centre for Design History are involved in pushing the boundaries of the subject. Study at Brighton takes an inclusive definition of art and design in an expanded field, which embraces the conjunction of professional and non-professional practices; digital and analogue artefacts, and the de-centring of art and design practice away from the singular object to complex ecologies, objects and systems.
As such, research and enterprise at Brighton offers real opportunities to develop wide social and economic impact via our links with the cultural sector, particularly museums and art galleries, government and voluntary sectors, arts and community engagement, and importantly, creative businesses.
Close professional contact for History of art PhD and History of design PhD students leads to innovative research collaborations with national institutions such as the Design Museum and Victoria and Albert Museum, as well as with local collections and centres of historical interest such as the University of Brighton Design Archives; the Royal Pavilion and Museums Brighton and Hove, with its collection of decorative art and design of designated international status; the Keep, East Sussex Record Office; Charleston Farmhouse, home of members of the Bloomsbury Group; Ditchling Museum, and the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill.
We have a long tradition of securing research studentships through the AHRC (Arts and Humanities Research Council) including the techné scheme and other external funders to support research students and have led successful collaborative doctoral awards with the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Design Museum, the Imperial War Museum, the Society of Industrial Artists and Designers, and Brighton Museum and Galleries.

City campus
Our City campus is in the cultural heart of Brighton, a short stroll from the beach and the pier. The nearby Phoenix Brewery halls of residence are home to 300 students. The city centre is just a short walk away, including the popular Kemp Town, Hanover and Queens Park areas.

PSW Opportunity
- 2 Years PSW is applicable after completing a minimum duration of 9 months course (like- Undergraduate, Postgraduate Level)
- 3 Years PSW is applicable after completing PhD level courses.
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
For applicants whose first language is not English, the minimum standard of English competence accepted is normally equivalent to the following International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores:
- Normally we require an overall score of 6.5 with 6.5 in reading and writing, 6.0 in listening and speaking. There are exceptions to this and they are as follows:
- research degrees in Arts and Humanities and Health Professions require 7.0 overall, 7 for writing, and none below 6.5.
- research degrees in Brighton Business School and the School of Sport and Service Management: 7.0 overall, 7 for writing, and none below 6.0.
- research degrees in Engineering, and Environment and Technology require a minimum of 6.0 in each component
- All SELT (Secure English language tests) must have been obtained within the preceding two years of the course start date.
Important information regarding changes to the approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) list:
The University of Brighton will continue to accept non-SELT tests such as ‘IELTS Academic’ and ‘Pearson Test of English Academic’, as long as your test results meet the course requirements.
