MA Popular Music and Culture

Be part of a lively popular-music research community that embraces everything from metal music to film scores and work alongside performers, composers and studio producers.

You will join peers with backgrounds in cultural studies, sociology, music and the creative arts to explore today's local live music scene and its connection to the wider industry. From researching gigs and events to composing scores for film and television, you will discover how a variety of communities fuse together to create this vibrant and expanding scene.

Whether developing your songwriting and music editing techniques in our studios or organising events and liaising with artists at Leeds Festival, you will gain the hands-on experience employers are looking for while gathering evidence to carry through into your major research project.

With its combination of research and practice, your course will provide the perfect springboard to discover the interconnectivity of popular music and culture and engage with the vibrant and varied music scene in Leeds.

Campus Information

Headingley Campus

Our Headingley Campus is situated just outside of the city centre in the picturesque suburbs and is easily accessible by public transport with regular direct buses into the city. Headingley is an extremely popular student area. It has its own vibrant community with bars, shops and restaurants for you to enjoy. Our beautiful campus is full of green spaces, wildlife and historical buildings. It鈥檚 a wonderful contrast from the modern city campus, which is ideal as when you join us you will have the opportunity to enjoy both.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should either have at least a second class honours degree or have equivalent experience or training, normally from within the work environment. All applications should be supported by a reference

IELTS

IELTS 6.0 with no skills below 5.5, or an equivalent qualification. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.

India

Qualification: Bachelor degree

Grade: 2.5 GPA for 2:2 equivalent

English language requirements (one of the below):

  • All India Senior School Certificate (CBSE) – English Grade 70%
  • Indian School Certificate (Class-XII) (CISCE) – English Grade 70%

Nepal

  • Qualification: Three-year or four-year degree from a recognized institution in Nepal 
  • Grade: 60% or above for a three-year degree OR 50% or above for a four-year degree
  • English language requirements: English language requirements: IELTS 6.0 with no skill below 5.5

Sri Lanka

  • Qualification: Bachelor's degree from a UGC recognized institution in Sri Lanka
  • Grade: 50% or above
