Politics with Sociology BSc(Hons)

What impact does crime and social change have on all our lives? What does it mean to be a citizen of a country? How do you classify someone’s identity in society? The worlds of politics and sociology converge on some crucial issues that we all face, and this course gives you the chance to find out more about the sociological issues and debates which influence political theory, systems and practice.

Politics is the study of how decisions are made in economic, social and political institutions. Sociology is the study of the social world in which we live, looking at everything from social relationships and identities through to inequality and difference.Both subjects are rewarding disciplines and combining the two can help you build crucial skills that employers are looking for.

The course looks at how the political and social arenas interact, at both a national and international level. You'll study vital issues such as conflict resolution, democracy and development, and different systems of government. On the Sociological side of things you’ll pay particular attention to issues of citizenship and identity. In your second and third years, you’ll choose from a range of modules to specialise in the subjects that interest you.

We also received 100% overall student satisfaction for politics in the National Student Survey 2020.

How will you learn?
In your second year you’ll have the chance to go on a work placement to put the skills you’ve learnt into practice and make useful industry contacts too. Previous students have taken placements with non-governmental organisations (NGOs), the civil service, national and local government, MPs and political parties.
You’ll have the opportunity to study abroad for a term in your second year.
You’ll have the opportunity to get involved in a range of extra-curricular activities, such as getting involved with the student Politics Society to develop your debating skills and gain practical experience in a supportive environment.
You also benefit from guest lecturers such as MPs and political figures, and student-led debates.

Campus Information

Queensgate

The university's main campus, Queensgate, is south-east of Huddersfield town centre. Virtually all of the university's teaching takes place on the site. The campus is split in two by the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. It features a mixture of converted mill buildings, and purpose-built facilities

PSW Opportunity

2 Years PSW is applicable after completing a minimum duration of 9 months course (like- Undergraduate, Postgraduate Level)
3 Years PSW is applicable after completing PhD level courses.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

BBC at A Level

112 UCAS tariff points from a combination of Level 3 qualifications including a grade B in an A Level or a Distinction in BTEC Subsidiary Diploma or National Extended Certificate.

DMM in BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma

Pass Access to Higher Education Diploma with 45 Level 3 credits at Merit or above
If your first language is not English, you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum for IELTS is 6.0 overall with no element lower than 5.5, or equivalent will be considered acceptable.
