Psychology with Counselling BSc(Hons)

Everyone has times in their life when they may suffer from personal difficulties. Whether they’ve lost someone close, had an unpleasant experience or even come through illness, they may need to reach out for help and support. This course combines the theory of psychology with practical counselling approaches, helping you build the skills required to help people in need.

The course aims to give you a unique and invaluable insight into human behaviour. You’ll have the opportunity to use the skills that you’ve developed in a wide range of situations, careers or further study. We’ll look at the science of mind and behaviour, which is the Psychology side of the course, and also at the different types of counselling approaches. Cognitive behavioural therapy, person-centred, psychodynamic therapy and others – you’ll have the opportunity to explore a wide range of techniques. You’ll also look at the importance of health and wellbeing in day-to-day life, and how to support other people in their everyday lives.

How will you learn?
On the course we’ll take a research focus, looking at the theory and practice of counselling and psychology, helping your personal development during the three years.
You’ll be guided by specialists in subject areas like biopsychology, developmental psychology, personality and individual differences, and counselling psychology.
You’ll be able to take advantage of excellent facilities to enhance your studies, including our EEG system which monitors brain activity, our eye tracker, biopsychological testing systems and a specialist polygraph (lie-detector machine).
This course is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS), so you’ll be able to apply for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership if you graduate with a Lower Second Class Honours or higher.
