New Zealand Certificate in Mechanical Engineering

Jump-start your career as an apprentice fitter and turner, welder / fabricator, tool maker / machinist or refrigeration engineer through this certificate.

The subjects studied on this programme are the equivalent to the first year of an apprenticeship and give you a head start in your mechanical engineering career. It is a recognised entry for students to take up apprenticeships in the mechanical engineering trades and involves practical and theoretical training.

You will gain general knowledge with engineering tools, machinery and equipment, as well as worksite processes and principles. You will also gain skills and knowledge in health and safety, numeracy, communication and team work.

You will gain practical skills through hands on learning. Theory is all linked to your practical learning.

You will also learn through project based tasks to solve problems so you can progress naturally using your own learning style.

You will learn in the workshop, the classroom and at work placements as well as be involved in field trips.

For the workplace learning part of the programme, you will need to find a suitable employer. Tutors can support you in identifying and organising the placement.
