Human Development and Family Sciences, B.S.F.C.S

Do you like working with children and their families? Do you want to improve the quality of life for children and families? If so, then the Human Development and Family Sciences program is the one for you!

Human Development and Family Sciences graduates are uniquely qualified for careers helping others, contributing to society, and making a difference in the lives of children and their families. Specifically, students will gain knowledge related to development across the lifespan, family relationships, family interaction, family and cultural diversity, family policy, program administration, guidance, and developmentally appropriate curriculum planning for young children.

The HDFS program focuses on issues to improve the lives of individuals, families and communities across the life course and within social and cultural contexts. Students learn to use the multidisciplinary approaches, cutting-edge methodologies and research to help children, youth and families succeed.

Our graduates have careers in childcare services, pediatric services in hospitals (Child Life Specialists),  human services, and businesses and nonprofits related to children or families. Many continue their education in graduate or professional school becoming counselors, occupational therapists, marriage and family therapists, social workers, physicians, attorneys, or policymakers.

Texas State's Child Development Center offers an unique opportunity for family and child development students. This facility serves as a research and teaching practicum site for those who are interested in working in programs for the young.
