Master of Science in Human-Centered Computing (HCC)

Human-Centered Computing (HCC) focuses on the design, implementation, and evaluation of interactive information technology systems that are both usable and accessible. The goal of Human-Centered Computing is an understanding of how humans interact with information technologies and to use this information to improve the lives of those individuals.

The MS program in HCC is an interdisciplinary program that has been training HCC practitioners and researchers since 2007. The program has two tracks: a Practitioner Track for those who wish to become user experience, information architecture, or usability professionals and a Research Track for those who are interested in pursuing a Master’s Thesis and possibly apply to a PhD program. Graduates from our program have moved on to be UX directors in both government and industrial positions, and graduates from the research track have joined top HCC PhD research programs.

The program typically takes full-time students (two to three courses per semester) two years to complete, and students in both tracks must complete 30 credits (10 3-hour courses).

Job Opportunity Potential

Posting Opportunities (Jobs, Internships, Co-ops and Research): Handshake

Handshake, part of the NACElink Network, is UMBC’s centralized online recruitment system. Post all of your open internships, co-ops, and full- and part-time positions online for students and alumni to view for FREE.

Searching Student Resumes
Handshake also contains a searchable database of participating student and alumni resumes. Search using a range of filters to find potential candidates with skills and majors desired by your organization.

To be given access to the Resume Book, you must have an approved position in Handshake and not be a 3rd party recruiter or provide hiring services.

On-Campus Interviews
On-campus interviews are a convenient way to interview pre-screened UMBC students. Using Handshake, you can request a schedule, post your position(s), collect resumes, pre-screen candidates, and view your schedule. The Career Center handles all the logistics of this free recruitment service, including arrangements for a private interview room at the Center.

Virtual Interviews
Unable to come to campus to conduct interviews? Do you prefer to interview candidates virtually?  We are here to assist you with coordinating remote interview schedules.

One of the key factors to a student having a successful remote interview is holding it in a distraction-free space where the interviewer is able to clearly see and hear the student. The Career Center’s interview rooms are available for UMBC students to reserve for remote interviews. If you are scheduling a remote/virtual interview with a UMBC student, please encourage them to request an interview room.
