Master of Arts in Latin American Studies

The Latin American and Iberian Institute (LAII) fosters research and education within UNM about the cultures, languages, history, and societies of these world regions, and works to share UNM’s expertise and resources with partners including Central New Mexico Community College, K-12 schools, the National Hispanic Cultural Center, Instituto Cervantes, and other organizations in the community.

LAII’s efforts are sustained and bolstered by UNM's community of scholars whose research centers on Mexico, Central America, South America, the Spanish speaking Caribbean, Spain, and Portugal.  Over one hundred and twenty faculty members at UNM conduct research and/or teach on these regions, representing a wide range of disciplines, interests, and approaches.  The Institute facilitates this scholarship, provides a focal point for interdisciplinary discussions, and distributes resources to seed new research projects for faculty and their students.  Drawing on university resources, and in partnership with outside funders, LAII helps departments recruit highly qualified faculty and students, and enables students to acquire new languages, conduct field research, and complete their degrees efficiently.

The origins of the LAII date back to 1941 with the establishment of the School of Inter-American Affairs under the leadership of Professor Joaquin Ortega.  From the outset, UNM’s Latin America initiatives stressed community engagement within New Mexico and beyond.  Today, this takes the form of helping K-12 teachers in the state bring Latin American cultural, language, and social studies content to their classrooms across grade levels.  In a typical year, LAII holds over 25 K-12 events reaching over 700 teachers and impacting thousands of students. LAII also produces curriculum materials that build upon books, films, and art exhibits.  These programs place particular emphasis on promoting literacy, through the Vamos a Leer book group and blog that has created and maintained a community of teachers who exchange ideas regarding both adult and youth books and how best to incorporate these in teaching.  Community engagement also stands out in the work of many affiliated faculty and students, who work on vital issues ranging from migration to food production to language preservation.

Campus and community outreach serves as a central and critical component of the LAII’s overall mandate. In a state in which Spanish is an official second language and a significant portion of the population has roots in Latin America, Latin American area and language studies are of great interest to diverse sectors of the population. In AY 2020-2021, the LAII sponsored 65 events reaching more than 4,600 people. The LAII also features presentations by UNM faculty from affiliated departments that highlight their research projects and publications. As part of a growing initiative, several of our events are archived as audio podcasts and videos, freely accessible to the public through the LAII Digital Repository and YouTube channel. 

LAII supports area specialists in all fields, facilitating ties to Latin American institutions, and providing an extra-departmental community of scholars with shared regional interests, skills, and commitments.  Faculty Field Research Grants seed new research; Interdisciplinary Project Development grants facilitate collaboration, workshops, and proposal development; and ongoing faculty working groups promote interdisciplinary dialog.  Each year an interdisciplinary symposium endowed by the late Professor Richard Greenleaf highlights a different Latin American theme, with participation and collaboration by internal and external scholars.

LAII houses and funds the interdisciplinary Latin American Studies program, which offers BA, MA, and PhD degrees drawing on course offerings from over 30 departments across 9 colleges of the university.  LAS alumni hold a variety of positions in business, government, education, and non-profit work, using the languages skills, regional knowledge, and analytical tools they learned through the program. LAS offers four dual degree programs pairing the LAS degree with professional degrees in law, population health, business administration, and community and regional planning.

Our office provides professional career advisement to current UNM students as well as UNM alumni and community members.

Career Development Facilitators (CDFs) are available through appointments or walk-ins to assist students with:

  • Choosing or changing their major
  • Assessing abilities, interests and values
  • Clarifying career goals
  • Writing a resume or cover letter
  • Preparing for interviews
  • Conducting a job search
  • Preparing to attend graduate school.

Our office provides students and employers an opportunity to meet face-to-face. This time-saving, cost-effective service allows students to have their resumes screened by employers and be selected to interview on campus for employers' job opportunities. Students must be registered with our office in order to participate in the on-campus recruiting program.

Completion of four years of US high school with a 2.5 GPA or better.
ACT English score of 19 or better (test not REQUIRED for admission).
SAT Evidence-Based Reading/Writing (post-March 2016) score of 500 or SAT Verbal score (pre-March 2016) of 480 or better (test not REQUIRED for admission).
1 year of full-time study (minimum 24 credit hours) at a regionally-accredited US college or university with a 3.0 GPA or higher.
Completion of two semesters of freshman English composition (English 110 and 120 equivalent) with a grade of C or higher at a regionally- accredited U.S. college or university.  (These courses must be completed on an A-F grade scale.)
Bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited US college or university or a recognized institution in English-Speaking Canada, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia, or New Zealand.
Attendance in the Center for English Language and American Culture (CELAC)program at UNM with successful completion of full-time studies in the Academic Bridge
level of English instruction (2.5 GPA or better) and good standing.
