Bachelor of Vision Science / Master of Optometry

With Deakin’s Bachelor of Vision Science/Master of Optometry, you can graduate with a professional qualification in optometry in just three and a half years. Gain the knowledge and skills to be work-ready and be eligible to apply for registration to practice as an optometrist in Australia and New Zealand. We emphasize understanding the visual health issues that impact regional and rural Australia, particularly those contributing to the health gap that exists between members of these communities and those living in urban centers.

Gain a holistic understanding of the practice of optometry, with strong foundations in evidence-based and reflective practice, interprofessional collaborative practice, and practice management. Clinical placements are a big focus of this program and you will spend the final six months of the course as a student resident. You will also gain crucial skills in the clinical assessment, treatment, and management of eye and vision disorders.

You will investigate the structure and function of the visual system while learning about various visual health issues and their wider impact on the local and international community. You’ll cover a broad spectrum of industry-relevant study areas that prepare you for work as a professional optometrist, including:

Bachelor degree holders including honours can get upto 2 years of post study stay
Master by course work and extended (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 2 years
Masters by research (with a duration exceeding 2 years) and PhD holder can stay upto 3 years
The Maximum eligible age to apply for PSW will be reduced to 35 years of age from 50 years of age for all applicants

Due to the Australian Indian Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement signed by the 2 countries, according to which:

Indian students completing bachelor degree including honours can stay upto 2 years
Bachelor degree with First class honours in STEM including ICT can stay upto 3 years
Masters by coursework in extended researched (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 3 years
PhD students can stay upto 4 years

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

India

COURSE TYPE AND AQF LEVEL

Bachelor Degree (AQF Level7) (including integrated honours (AQF Level 8))

MINIMUM ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

Senior Secondary Certificate of Education with unadjusted ATAR of at least 50 or equivalent, or
Certificate IV in a related discipline, or
Diploma in any discipline or 50% completion of Diploma in a related discipline, or
Successful completion of at least two relevant Deakin University units.

If you're currently studying Year 12, or completed Year 12 in the last two years, you will need to meet all the following criteria to be considered for admission to this degree:

Year 12 prerequisite subjects

Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English EAL (English as an Additional Language) or at least 25 in English other than EAL
ATAR

This course uses the ATAR as part of its selection consideration.

To meet the English language proficiency requirements of this course, you will need to demonstrate at least one of the following:

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) English Units 3 and 4: Study score greater than 30 in English as an Additional Language (EAL) or greater than 25 in any other English
IELTS overall score of 6.5 (with no band score less than 6) or equivalent
