BA (Hons) Animal Welfare and Society

You will explore connections and relationships between humans and other animals, and critically review theories, philosophies and issues concerning the treatment of them. You will study a range of issues including animal welfare; animal ethics; animal law; consuming animals; criminality and animals; animal representations; animals and policy; environment and animals; and animal advocacy.

Throughout the course you explore crucial questions about human relationships with other animals. How do we understand them? What are our responsibilities to them? Should we eat them? Why do we develop emotional attachments to them? Why do we vilify some animals and not others? An essential element of the course is how humans relate to other animals, and what it means to be human.

This interdisciplinary course engages with scholarly work from the arts and humanities, social sciences and natural sciences in order to examine how humans may reconsider their relationship with animals. The broad scope and thought-provoking content enables you to discover and explore your areas of interest.

King Alfred Quarter

Student life is centred on our King Alfred Quarter, within walking distance of the historic cathedral city of Winchester. In recent years, the King Alfred Quarter has been added to and renovated to enhance its facilities with the latest industry-standard equipment, digital networks and AV technology. The award-winning King Alfred Centre is a bright and spacious social hub. It houses the Student Union, bookshop, Learning Cafe, Food Hall, Terrace Bar, Gourmet Burger Company, Student Union Shop and The Vault 鈥� the main venue for student social activities. The St Alphege building offers state-of-the-art learning and teaching facilities, including 10 lecture rooms and a mezzanine floor with open-access PCs.

West Downs Quarter

The West Downs Quarter is a short walk from the centre of the King Alfred Quarter. It is the home of the West Downs Student Village and the University of Winchester Business School. The University of Winchester Business School its own cafe (Cafe Life) and number social learning spaces with the latest IT equipment for you to use for individual and group work sessions. Other key features of the West Downs Quarter include the West Downs Gallery, which is open to the public and runs an art exhibition programme throughout the year featuring established and emerging artists from the world of visual arts. It is also home to the Research and Knowledge Exchange Centre, which is dedicated to research, enterprise and consultancy. It provides excellent resources for postgraduate students, particularly research students as it is the centre of research administration and support services.

Job Opportunity Potential

Graduates gain employment in national and international animal advocacy; charitable, welfare and conservation organisations; and with animal-related Governmental departments and commercial organisations. Some may use this qualification as a gateway to other pathways such as teaching, veterinary specialisation in animal welfare, doctoral studies and research in related fields, or accreditation as an animal behaviourist.

Pre-approved for a Masters

If you study a Bachelor Honours degree with us, you will be pre-approved to start a Masters degree at Winchester. To be eligible, you will need to apply by the end of March in the final year of your degree and meet the entry requirements of your chosen Masters degree.

PSW Opportunity

2 Years PSW is applicable after completing a minimum duration of 9 months course (like- Undergraduate, Postgraduate Level)
3 Years PSW is applicable after completing PhD level courses.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Foundation

Students who have completed 12th grade with scores between 50% and 70% will be considered

Undergraduate

Successful completion of a suitable one year UK Foundation course (normally minimum 60%)
International Baccalaureate(minimum of 24 points)
Successful completion of year 10 Maths and English with a minimum of 75% plus completion of:
Indian School Certificate (Year-12)
Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) / Standard 12 - See required scores below
Diploma (from a State Board of Technical Education)
Applicants who have completed the first year of an undergraduate degree at a recognised Indian university may be considered for direct entry to undergraduate programmes.

Year 12 (HSC) grade requirements:

Calcutta Board and Tamil Nadu 70% or above
West Bengal 60% or above
Maharashtra 75% or above

For undergraduate study (including courses with an integrated foundation year)

Standard IELTS with an overall score of 5.5 at a minimum of 5.5 in each component.
Non-standard (for example; Physiotherapy, Social Work, Journalism, Nursing) IELTS 7.0 or equivalent.
